My computer seems to be running slow and acting strange.?

I don't have a virus and everything is up to date. The Internet cuts off on me randomly, it runs slow it takes a long time to load and it freezes up. It's not five years old yet but I was told that by technology standards it is old. I was told that maybe I should update my operating system I'm currently using windows XP on a laptop from Dell
