Do java ferns really need co2?

i am looking to plant a java fern in my fish tank, i have a 29 gallon. this will be my first time planting. i know the fern doesnt need alot of light. but i am confussed on the co2. i keep getting that the fern needs co2. my question really is does the java fern really need co2?
